International Hotspots Continues to Rise

ISTANBUL, Turkey, July 26, 2005 – Turkey, a country more than twice the size of California, with its spectacular coastline, majestic mountains, cosmopolitan cities and quaint villages, also boasts a city named one of the World’s Top 10 Best by Travel + Leisure in the magazine’s 10th annual World’s Best Awards readers poll, published in the August issue. Istanbul , the renowned international cultural, shopping and dining mecca, was honored as the seventh best global travel destination and the third finest of the Top 10 European Cities, a continent replete with an abundance of alternatives for travelers. The issue noted the trends witnessed by the ten years of travel polls and World’s Best Awards, “In general, readers are gravitating toward more unusual and authentic places,” such as “ Istanbul .”

Also making waves on the prestigious pages of Travel + Leisure are Istanbul ’s distinguished hotels, the alluring glamour of which ranked supreme in both the international and European polls of the 2005 Awards. Four Seasons Istanbul, a former prison, was named the second best European hotel by the world’s most seasoned travelers and the tenth greatest place to stay in the world. The Ciragan Palace Hotel Kempiniski Istanbul, with its unparalleled opulence and majestic Ottoman cuisine, made the grade yet again, this year as the seventh favorite hotel in all of Europe and thirty first most beloved internationally.

At number seven, this is Istanbul ’s fourth appearance on the list of Top 10 International and European Cities . Beginning in 2002 as voters’ sixth most cherished destination in Europe and ninth overall international city to visit in 2003, Istanbul is the rapidly rising favorite making the grade in 2005 as Europe ’s third greatest metropolis.

Turkey , the site of two wonders of the ancient world, is a present-day marvel – the cradle of civilization, the very center of world history and a modern Westward-looking republic. It is a country of fascinating contrasts, where antiquity is juxtaposed with the contemporary, the familiar with the exotic; where sun-swept beaches beckon less than an hour away from snow-capped mountains, and everywhere visitors are treated to the extraordinary warmth of the Turkish people.
